The Intellectual Capital division is tasked with the creation of technopreneurs among UM’s expert researchers as well as commercialising and monetising UM’s extensive intellectual property and innovation resources. The division comprises of 2 subsidiaries: UM Innovations Sdn Bhd (UM Innovations) and UM Capital Bhd (UMCB).
The vision of the division is to transform Universiti Malaya into a leader of innovation in Malaysia, and its Mission is to:
- Establish an advanced and highly relevant innovation incubator;
- Increase the number of successful start-ups as well as early-stage entrepreneurial activities in Universiti Malaya;
- Develop human capital especially in the area of business support and commercialisation activities; and
- Advance the UM Brand in technology development through the use of the tagline: “Powered by UM INNOVATIONS”.
UM Innovations is a platform hosting academic-linked business ventures. It serves as an incubator hub to facilitate the technology transfer and commercialisation of research outputs while aspiring to develop additional university start-ups. This is in line with UM’s commitment to translate new knowledge into impactful outcomes, including developing critical human capital and new technology drivers for the nation’s economic growth. UM Innovations serves as a conducive entrepreneurial hub designed for academic-innovators and entrepreneurs.
UMCB manages a portfolio of spinoff companies that are the outcome of UM’s Technopreneur and Deeptech Accelerator programmes. These companies, driven by licensed UM technologies, are part of an integrated strategy to deliver optimum impact from the output of UM R&D through to their application. Ultimately, these spinoffs are targeted to produce the following outcomes: creation of new technopreneurs and high-tech job opportunities, economic returns on R&D spent and beneficial societal impact
